The snow that had been falling during the day yesterday stopped for a while, but picked up again overnight, possibly due to the influence of the multiple low-pressure systems that had formed around Honshu. The overnight snowfall dropped a good amount of snow on not just the upper portion of the resort, but also in the middle to lower areas, which transformed the landscape into the type of winter scene that is typical of Tsugaike at this time of year. Visibility was pretty low at times and almost whiteout conditions at others this morning due to the continuing snowfall and the strong gusts of wind that occasionally blew down from the summit area.

There’s currently around 30 to 35cm of snow on the bottom half of the Han-no-ki Slope (first photo), and between 35 and 40cm in the area alongside the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair Lift (pictured).

The natural snow on the run paralleling the Han-no-ki High Speed Pair Lift and the Tsuga-no-mori Slope (pictured) had a nice, fluffy feeling and was clearly different in texture from the hard artificial snow below it. I expect that once the groomers get to work and the natural and artificial snow is mixed and pressed togehter, it should make for pretty soft, pleasant conditions.

When I made my way back down to the lower portion of the ski resort around 10:00, the falling snow had a noticeably higher moisture content than the snow earlier in the morning. The wet snow on the Shirakaba Slope (approx. 30cm) and the Oya-no-hara Slope (around 10 to 15cm) should be a good foundation to build on with the upcoming forecast including colder temperatures and snow.
