This morning, I spoke with a member of the ski patrol, who shared, “The snow has piled up like crazy. Clearing the lifts is a huge task.” It was such heavy snowfall that I couldn’t help but wonder if I was going to be able to produce a proper report. However, Happo-One’s operations were exceptional as always, with the gondola, Panorama Pair (pictured, background), and Alpen Quad all starting right on schedule this morning.

As a result, the official snow depth has impressively surprassed the 400 cm mark for the first time in about three years, since March 5th, 2022! On the way to my target destination, the ungroomed steep slopes of Sodeguro, I found 25 to 30 cm of fluffy new snow atop the moderately firm, groomed powder surface of the south route at Usagidaira. Dropping into Sodeguro (pictured), I was greeted by an incredible 100 to 110 cm of fresh snow.

Naturally, there was no bottoming out, providing an exceptional sense of float and an unforgettable deep powder experience. Later, I met a snowboarder living in Hakuba Village who said, “I always follow your updates. The snow at the base was a bit heavy, but the upper areas have excellent snow. And wow, it’s deep!”

The Panorama Course (pictured) featured a well-packed groomed powder with 30 to 40 cm of fresh, fluffy snow on top. In the gentle midsection, some beginner to intermediate skiers struggled to get unstuck after coming to a stop. On the Central Course, which had 50 to 60 cm of fresh snow, the large underlying moguls created a wonderfully buoyant and springy ride.
