Shinshu Apple Cider (pictured) is a sweet, warm cider that’s one of the seasonal specialties at CHAVATY HAKUBA. The cider is made by combining a homemade purée of the Gunma Meigetsu variety of Shinshu apple with the rich flavor of Uva tea and a blend of spices, finally accented by the tartness of cranberries for a perfectly balanced treat.

This snow this morning was coming down hard enough to make me want to cozy up with a hot drink! At 6:52 a.m., a heavy snow warning was issued for Hakuba and Otari villages, with dense, large flakes falling steadily across the resort. Plunging my hand into the untouched surface at the start of the South Slope (pictured), my arm sank in past the elbow, with the groomer tracks faintly detectable at the bottom.

As I passed beginners stuck and struggling in the deep snow and set off down the slope, the steeper middle section offered an incredible sense of floatation. “It was amazing! Now I’m deciding where to ride next,” shared a snowboarder from Tokyo. The Sunny Valley Course (pictured), with its moderately packed groomed powder sufface, consistently had 10 to 20 cm of fresh snow layered on top, adding to the thrill.

I spoke with a HAKUBA VALLEY season pass holder from Aichi, who told me, “Snownavi! I always check your updates. I was worried because the snow at the base was wet, but the conditions up top are great.” By the way, the main IWATAKE SNOW PARK is set to open on the South Slope this weekend, on 1/18 (Sat.)!
