The snow that started falling last night picked up in intensity early this morning. Two visitors from Nagoya (pictured) greeted me saying, “We found the Snownavi instagram account a few days ago while looking up snow information. This is our first time at Hakunori, which seems to have a local feel compared to other places in Hakuba. We didn’t expect it to snow this much. It’s really incredible!”
[Highway Course]

At riding the Alps No. 3 Pair Lift as it started moving on time at 8:00 a.m., I entered the Highway Course (pictured) and found that 25 to 30 cm of new snow had piled up on top of moderately firm, “powdery” wet snow groomed base. The snow had a slightly heavier, fluffy texture. The crowds, especially the international visitors, were quick to hit the slopes, and there were many cheers of excitement in both Japanese and English echoing through the air.

The Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) had 20 to 25 cm of fresh snow on top of the groomed powdery wet snow, and was also very easy to ski, just like the Highway Course. I had planned to head towards the Sky View Slope via Cortina in search of powder, but unfortunately, due to avalanche concerns, both the Cortina No. 4 Pair and Alps No. 10 Pair were closed for the day. (What a shame!)

That said, Hakunori offers numerous powder areas, including the Expert Course, Snake Course, and self-responsibility areas, and this mornin, the steep, ungroomed Snake Course had about 40 cm of fresh snow! By the way, this weekend, on 1/19 (Sun.), it’s Kids Ski Day where elementary school students can get lift tickets for half price. Additionally, there will be a snowmobile experience (free for elementary school age children and younger) and free handouts of pork miso soup.
