The heavy snowfall between the night before last and last night occurred as the temperature rose briefly just before a powerful winter pressure system set in—showcasing the intensity of this season’s winter weather in the Hakuba area. I spoke with two visitors from Osaka and Aichi Prefectures (pictured), who shared, “We always follow your updates! We’re working resort jobs at the base and skiing through Golden Week.”

This morning brought a significant drop in temperatures, and light, dry snow was falling across the upper areas of the ski resort. While the calm winds were a welcome relief, the dense fog presented a challenge. A staff member from Kitaone Highland Terrace (pictured) told me, “I always read your reports. The groomers on both the Kurobishi Quad area and Skyline were a pleasure to ride on! It’d be perfect if the fog would just clear now.”

The southern route of Usagidaira and the along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) offered moderately packed powder grooming. Ungroomed areas like the Tenbo Course (pictured), and the areas along the Kurobishi 3 Pair and Alpen Quad featured 5 to 10 cm of wind-packed fresh snow atop a soft base, making for smooth and enjoyable skiing. Meanwhile, lower areas such as the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, Sakka Wave, Shirakaba, and Nakiyama were beneath the clouds, and provided easy-to-ski, groomed powder conditions.

Early this morning, I met a skier from Tokyo (pictured) who shared, “I always follow your updates! I’m staying at a lodge in the foothills, skiing in the mornings, and working remotely in the afternoons.” By the way, starting 1/25 (Sat.), fireworks will be launched from the Nakiyama Slope for five consecutive weeks!
