The officially reported base depth at Iwatake reached a remarkable 300 cm yesterday, 1/16 (Thu.). In fact, looking back through Snownavi’s archives all the way up to 2015, we weren’t able to find any record of such a high figure at Iwatake. With a low temperature of -9°C and strong northwesterly winds, it was an exceptionally cold morning.

Both the South and East slopes were shrouded in thick fog, so I headed to the Iwatake Back Bowl, where the tree-lined edges provided clear directional guidance. I ran into the owner of Coffee Senju (pictured), who told me, “Thanks for your hard work. As an Iwatake season pass holder, I often visit on weekdays and also make great use of Iwatake no Yu.On VIEW C and D, the snow was a well-packed powder base topped with 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow, allowing my skis to glide smoothly.

At the IWATAKE WHITE PARK’s Kids & Beginner Slope you can enjoy tubing, various types of sleds, and Strider bikes (¥500/hour). I had a conversation with a family from Australia (pictured) who shared, “We’re staying in Hakuba for three days, and the snow is amazing!” By the way, Sunday 1/19 is a Kids Ski Day when elementary school students can ride the lifts free of charge all day.

Around 9 a.m., the fog began to clear, and the winds subsided. Both the South and East Slopes offered moderately packed powder surfaces covered with a light 1 to 2 cm layer of fresh snow. A few diggers with the IWATAKE SNOW PARK (pictured) commented, “We’re preparing for tomorrow’s opening. With all the snow this season, we’ve been able to build larger features. From park beginners to advanced riders, come enjoy the park… and the view!”
