This morning, fine snow was coming down hard, while cold westerly winds were blowing. Determined to savor Madapow at its finest, I braved the chill and rode the No. 13 Lift to the top of the resort. Being a single lift with nothing at your sides, the surrounding frost-covered trees and the enticingly fresh snow felt even closer and more captivating than before.

The lead group let out triumphant shouts as they dropped into the ungroomed steep slopes of Crystal’s upper section (pictured). I delayed my own personal gratification, and headed toward Tangram. Among the many courses at Madarao Kogen, I personally find Adventure Isle the most challenging. Struggling through its twists and turns, I pushed on toward Powder Line and Powder Wave 2, eager for the powdery thrills ahead.

Beyond Adventure Isle lay a true powder paradise! Both the Powder Line, with its soft base, and the tree-lined Powder Wave 2 were blanketed with about 20 cm of fluffy new snow. A group of three visitors from within the prefecture waved at me with big smiles, exclaiming, “That felt amazing!”

Many early-morning visitors who took the Super Quad headed straight to the ungroomed section in the middle of Giant. (Note:The World Cup course is closed due to cracks). I enjoyed about 20 cm of fluffy new snow atop a firm, uneven base. The lower section of Giant (pictured), featured a soft groomed powder base with 10 cm of new snow on top that provided an exhilarating sensation.
