The timing of this “We love Snownavi!” greeting was perfect! The one the other day during the brief window of sunshine at Hakuba Goryu’s sunrise skiing was good too, but this time it was even more amazing thanks to the breathtaking scenery in the background. The No. 11 Pair Lift (pictured, about 1,200m) pre-opened on 1/18 (Sat.), and is now available for all guests to ride, as long as they leave their skis at the lift entrance.

When heading out for backcountry skiing or winter mountaineering, it’s necessary to have proper equipment such as a helmet, beacon, shovel, and probe, and to submit a mountaineering plan. (*If you purchase a ¥1000 armband on your first ride, you won’t need to fill out a consent form on subsequent visits.) This season, due to heavy snow accumulation under the lift lines, even backcountry travelers will need to remove their skis and ride the lift one at a time. (*For sightseeing, two people can ride together.)

I spoke with a group of three from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured), who said, “We always read your reports! Today the weather is perfect for backcountry snowboarding! We’re going to put on our snowshoes and head a little deeper into the mountains before starting our descent.” The ride down on the lift after this was thrilling, with abundant snow coverage and a stunning combination of descent angle, elevation, and exhilarating views.

On both 1/19 (Sun.) and 1/20 (Mon.), the Highway Course (pictured), Kamoshika Course, Wakaguri Central Slope, and Satomi Central Slope all had well-packed groomed powder snow that was easy to glide on. A snowboarder from Hakuba Village (pictured) called out to me saying, “I always check your updates. The powder snow is nicely packed, making for a great carving surface.” The weather on 1/20 (Mon.) was similar to the day before, with cloudy skies gradually giving way to clearer blue skies. In fact, if you refer back to the first photo from yesterday’s report, it looks almost identical!

*My editor-in-chief jokingly commented, “There’s no greeting from anyone for the second paragraph today. If only we’d had someone on the lift in the background of saying ‘I always watch your reports!’ that would have been perfect!” (Oh dear!).
*The Alps No. 9 Pair lift will be out of service for the foreseeable future due to mechanical issues.
