It started to feel unseasonably warm yesterday afternoon. And even though the temperature this morning was -1°C, with strong sun and no wind, I didn’t feel the cold at all (in fact, it felt warm). However, at the top of the ski resort, the trees covered in frost stood out beautifully against the bright blue sky (pictured).

The Mt. Hieda Forest Course featured well-packed, groomed “powdery” wet snow. At the top of the Itadaira Course (pictured, 600m, max slope 31°, average 26°), I overheard people saying, “Whoa, that’s scary!” and “Can you make it?” This had me a bit worried, so after refocusing my attention, I began to ski down, but I found that the edges of my skis gripped firmly into the well-packed groomed wet snow, allowing for a smooth run.

The groomed Ikenota Slope, which had a firm wet snow surface early in the morning, began to soften around 10 a.m., with the top layer becoming slightly damp. A family from Tokyo (pictured) shared, “We’re skiing and staying at Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba for three nights. The meals and hot springs are great, and we’re very satisfied!”

While the snow surface began to soften in the sunlit areas, the shaded parts like the Hieda Mountain Forest Course (pictured) maintained a dry snow quality. Many skiers ventured off the gentle groomers onto the ungroomed steep slopes like Mt. Hieda Course 1 and Course 3, and cheers and shouts echoed from the tree areas.
