Shiga REPORT

2025.01.23170 cm / Sunny

The intense cold has eased slightly… though this morning, radiative cooling still made its presence felt, with my car thermometer reading -9°C in the parking lot. As I made my way on the snow-covered path on the way to the slopes, the snow crunched underfoot signaling ideal powder snow conditions. While riding the Third Quad, which started operating at 9 a.m., I was treated to a stunning view of Mt. Kasadake showcasing its characteristic midwinter beauty (pictured).

The Second and Third Beginner Courses (pictured) had a lively and cheerful atmosphere, thanks to ongoing lessons with two ski schools. Both slopes featured well-packed groomed powder snow, offering firm edge grip and smooth, easy skiing conditions. A student staying at Hotel Ichibokaku (pictured) shared, “The onsen bath is amazing! And of course, skiing is so much fun!”

I overheard another student nervously wondering, “Do you think I can make it down from the summit?” Fortunately, in addition to the well-packed groomed powder snow surface of the Umanose Course (250m, max 27 degrees, avg 18 degrees), a gentle detour route makes descending from here manageable for everyone. At the start of the course, snow monsters sculpted by the north wind (pictured, right) made an appearance, with many people stopping to take commemorative photos in front of them.

Kumanoyu offers a total of 11 runs, and no matter which you choose, you’ll always end up in front of Restaurant Bell D’or, so there’s no need to worry about getting lost (just watch out for the connecting route to Yokoteyama!) The First Pair Lift (pictured, background), which has been out of service since 1/21 (Tue.), remained closed again today. I spoke with a staff member who shared, “It looks like it’ll take a bit more time for repairs. Once we have a clear timeline for reopening, we’ll update the information on our website.”
