On the day after tomorrow, 1/26 (Sun.), starting at 11:00 a.m., the Kitaone Kogen’s Happo Kotatsu Café will host a free tasting of Happo’s local sake, “Hakuba Happo Kurobishi” Shinshu Origarami. This morning, the trees on the upper slopes were covered with a thin layer of frost. Although there was light, cold rain in the village yesterday evening, I was relieved to find no signs of rain on the Panorama Course (pictured), where fine snowflakes were gently falling.

The Panorama Course (pictured) had a firm, groomed wet snow. Although the cloudy skies made the snow surface slightly harder to see, I was able to execute turns without issue. There was an early rush of visitors, many of whom were equipped for snow mountaineering and backcountry skiing.

The area along the Kurobishi Quad had moderately packed, powdery wet snow. The firmly groomed wet snow surface of Usagidaira (pictured) had some hard spots, especially around the snowmaking machines. On the ungroomed sections along the Kurobishi 3 Pair and Alpen Quad, 10 to 15 cm of soft new snow had accumulated on top of the hard, irregular moguls. I made my way to the top of the ski resort, and just barely broke through the clouds. When I did, I was greeted by the pure white peaks of the Northern Alps. “The mountains look amazing. It’s turning out to be a great day,” said two visitors from Gifu Prefecture and Nagano City (pictured). The Riesen Grat had a soft, powdery groomed surface at the start, while the steeper section at the end featured moderately firm wet snow with a powdery feel.
