With clear skies above, the Iwatake Thanks Fair took place to great fanfare. I spoke with members of the Tokyo Thunder Ski Club, who told me, “We always follow your updates. Our club has produced SAJ demo skiers and Olympic athletes. We’re staying at Kirikubokan, and today, we’re enjoying the local sake Hakuba Nishiki!” By 10:30 a.m., half of the famed large pot of pork miso soup had been served, while the Itoigawa seafood booth next to it was selling fresh snow crab for ¥2,000 per cup or ¥3,000 for two cups.

Food for the charcoal-grilled seafood set with herring, smelt, and more (¥1,000), was being cooked over the fire. In addition to the large pot of pork miso soup, handouts of Hakuba Nishiki sake, beer, soft drinks, sweet red bean soup, mochi (pictured), and other snacks were being served with free seconds. During the mochi pounding experience, attendees from Australia, Chiba Prefecture, and Matsumoto City joined in, and even the village mascot, Murao III, swung the mallet to help pound the rice cakes. (The mochi from this experience was also handed out!)

The prize raffle featured approximately 1,000 items, including luxurious gifts such as season passes for next season, accommodation vouchers, one-day lift passes, and snowboards. Three visitors from the United States and Shizuoka Prefecture (pictured) shared, “We always read your reports! The pork miso soup was delicious. The woman in the center, who is temporarily back in Japan, won a backpack in the raffle.”

Another woman from Chiba Prefecture told me she was a fan of Snownavi, and added, “I came with my family and friends to enjoy the festival. I just had kani miso with the complimentary Hakuba Nishiki sake, and it was really delicious!” Incidentally, the international family pictured here joined in the photo spontaneously. In other news, the 39th Annual All Japan University Ski Technique Championship was being held on Big Bahn and Kamoshika Racing.
