The Northern Alps were tinged with a beautiful red alpenglow at dawn this morning, but clouds soon rolled in. By 8:00 a.m., when operations began, the sky was characterized by hazy cloud cover. Following the effects of radiative cooling and the lack of sunlight, the air felt icy cold, making it an especially chilly morning.
[Route 2]

At the start of the day, most people headed for the upper section of Route 1, leaving the fresh groomed corduroy patterns lingering on Route 2, which had a firm wet snow surface. It was great conditions for picking up speed! On Route 5 and Route 6, also with firmly groomed powder-like wet snow, I was able to comfortably repeat turns.

The lower section of Route 8 (pictured) had a moderately firm, powder-like groomed wet snow surface that was easy to ski on. A skier from Nagano City, who I rode with on Line-C, told me, “I always read your reports. The groomed snow today is amazing, and both Route 2 and the upper part of Route 1 are perfect for cruising fast.” Around 9 a.m., I began to catch occasional glimpses of sunlight.

The ungroomed Route 3 had firm, irregular moguls scattered across the surface. On the firm groomed surface of the lower section of Route 1, there were areas where artificial snow had formed small mounds. The snowfall from the night before last made Mt. Goryu even whiter, and it stood out dramatically against the dull gray sky.
