Conditions at Madarao Kogen Ski Resort remain excellent. As I headed towards the top of the resort amidst dense, dry snow, I encountered a world of rime ice, fog, and fresh powder. The ungroomed area on the upper part of Crystal (pictured) was covered in a soft, smooth layer of 15 to 20 cm of fresh powder!

As I dropped in, I enjoyed a pleasant floating sensation, though I did occasionally tap the underlying base. As skiers carved down the slope kicking up large sprays of snow behind them, riders on the No. 13 Lift commented, “That looks great!” and “It must feel amazing!” Caught up in the fun, I couldn’t resist and went back for a second round.

I met a couple from Aichi Prefecture who shared, “The course from the mountaintop through the frost-covered trees was absolutely beautiful. The snow quality was great too.” The Ocean View Course, which was also like a tunnel through the icy trees (pictured), featured moderately firm powder snow grooming. The snow that had fallen early in the morning stopped around 9 a.m., and by 9:30, the skies began to clear.

A snowboarder from Tokyo, who was riding the Super Quad, mentioned to me, “I’m a Mt. 3 season pass holder. Yesterday, I enjoyed the groomed runs at Yakebitaiyama, and today I came to Madarao in search of fresh snow.” The Paradise, Giant, and mid to lower portion of Crystal all had firm powder snow grooming, with about 5 cm of fresh snow on top, making for a pleasant ride.
