Sugadaira REPORT

2022.12.1030cm / Sunny

The start of the winter season has begun at Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort, with the opening of the Urataro Family East Course (pictured) in the Taro area and the Omatsuyama Friend Course → GO-no-hara Course → Family Course in the Pine Beak area. From 12/10 (Sat.) to 2/5 (Sun.), the “Ueda Sugadaira-wari Campaign” will be held, which offers a JPY1,000 discount for a 1-day ticket and a JPY2,000 discount for a 2-day ticket valid at all areas. (*For the Davos and Taro areas, the advance discount 1-day ticket is an additional 100 yen cheaper at JPY4,300 yen for adults.)

On this first day of opening, the snow coverage on the open courses stretched between 10 and 30 meters wide for the Omatsuyama Friend, GO-no-hara, and Family course (pictured), and about 30 meters wide for the Urataro Family East Slope. All were in good condition with well-packed artificial snow. I spoke with a staff member from Pine Beak who told me, “The course width is still a bit narrow, but we’re really happy to be open. Here’s to another great season!”

I had a brief interaction with a married couple from Nagano’s Shiojiri City who told me that they love the Snownavi site, and since they heard the resort was opening they came out to ski… and hopefully lose some weight. The Urataro Family East course has a maximum slope of 18 degrees, an average angle of 12 degrees, and a distance of 450 meters, which I found to be just right for practicing middle and short turns.

I caught up with the head of the Smile Snowboard School (pictured, 3rd from right) who said, “We’re kicking off our staff training today, and will be continuing until we open on 12/17 (Sat.). We hope to have a good turnout for our lessons this season! Today the Stage 3 Lift started operating at 8:40, 20 minutes earlier than the announced 9:00 a.m. opening time.
