Tsugaike REPORT

2025.01.28258 cm / Snow Clouds

Standing here with my camera, I was reminded of opening day, when Tsugaike was the first resort in the HAKUBA VALLEY to kick off this season. Heavy snowfalls started two days before the opening and persisted until mid-January, finally easing off on 1/18 (Sat.). Since then, we’ve had relatively few days with snow, but stepping off the gondola this morning, I was greeted by a steadily falling light, dry snow (pictured).

The groomed Tsuga-no-mori Slope (pictured) and Gotemba Course featured moderately firm wet snow surfaces with a “powder-like” feel, and were topped with 2 to 3 cm of fresh, fluffy snow. The sensation of the light snow gliding over my skis was delightful. The ungroomed sections of Tsuga-no-mori also had about 3 cm of light new snow accumulated on top of a moderately compacted base.

The groomed areas of the Han-no-ki Slope had a firm wet snow base, and the 1 to 2 cm layer of fresh snow on top gradually became wetter as I descended. By around 9 a.m., the snowfall had eased, and there were moments when the sun peeked through the clouds. Fog lingered around the midsection of Han-no-ki, but did not interfere with the skiing experience.

The upper section of the Champion Slope was groomed widely (pictured), and was shrouded in fog. Here too, a thin layer of slightly wet fresh snow covered the hard wet snow base. The Oya-no-hara and Karamatsu Slopes, busy mainly with international visitors, featured moderately-packed moist snow that offered an easy and enjoyable skiing experience.
