Tsugaike REPORT

2025.01.29265 cm / Snowy

After dying down yesterday before noon, the snowfall picked up again this morning, and was coming down at 8:40 a.m. (pictured). Looking at a weather map, I was concerned about strong winds, but in reality, they remained light. Since I was bundled up for the cold, I even broke a slight sweat while moving around. In just under two hours, the Han-no-ki Slope had accumulated an impressive 15 to 20 cm of light, fresh snow!

Along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair, the mix of older wet snow from the day before last, and the fresh snowfall since then had been pressed by the grooming machines into a moderately soft surface. Meanwhile, the area along the Han-no-ki No. 3 Quad had a moderately-packed groomed wet snow base. With the groomed surface flattened to perfection, skiing through the 15 to 20 cm of light, freshly fallen snow on top felt incredibly smooth!

Around 9:30 a.m., the Maruyama Slope (pictured) was pretty empty. With packed wet snow that felt even more powdery than yesterday, and no one around, if felt almost like a private slope, and I enjoyed effortless wide-sweeping turns. With the snowfall showing no signs of letting up and instead intensifying, anticipation for fresh powder tomorrow morning was building!

The woman on the right in the photo, holding a trail map, told me, “I’m staying in Hakuba for five days. JAPOW is amazing! By the way, where is the Kane-no-naru-oka Slope?” Meanwhile, the other woman shared, “I came from the UK to visit my son, who lives in Hakuba. This is such a wonderful place.” Part of the Kane-no-naru-oka No. 2 Slope was blocked off, and only a 20-meter wide section on the skier’s left side was open for skiing.
