Welcome back, winter! Thanks to a classic winter pressure pattern with tightly packed isobars, the snow was coming down steadily, and had been since early in the morning—thankfully, with almost no wind. I spoke with a skier from Oita Prefecture (pictured) who shared, “This is my first time visiting the HAKUBA VALLEY. Yesterday, when I walked into a shop, I was surprised to be spoken to in English. It really feels like being in another country!”

The Highway Course (pictured) and Kamoshika Course were covered with about 10cm of fresh, fluffy snow on top of well-packed, moist groomed snow. Each turn sent up a soft spray of powder, a clear sign of the great snow quality. With a smooth base and light new snow, the conditions were excellent—making it hard to resist lapping the Alps No Pair lift again and again.

The Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured, background) also had about 10 cm of fresh, fluffy snow on top of a firm, groomed wet snow base, making for smooth and enjoyable riding. However, the falling snow and light fog at times made it slightly difficult to see the surface. Thinking, “With this much accumulation, tomorrow might bring some deep powder for the first time in a while,” I decided that my morning run tomorrow would be on the Sky View Slope.

The Wakaguri Forest Course, Rabbit Course, and Hakunori Family Course were also in great shape, with firm, moist groomed snow topped with 10 to 15 cm of light fresh snow that was easy to ski on. By the way, in addition to the HAKUBA VALLEY shuttle bus, Hakunori operates a direct shuttle bus connecting Misorano Rotary, Happo Bus Terminal, and Hakunori.
