After the heavy snowfall that continued from the day before yesterday through early this morning, clear skies today highlighted the whiteness of the village below (pictured). Roads in the area, including both main roads and access routes to parking lots, were packed with snow and ice. However, due to unique circumstances, snowbanks along the roads don’t get particularly high in Hakuba (*). Meanwhile, neighboring Omachi City and Ogawa Village have typical snow levels for this point of the season, with no significant accumulation.

The groomed Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) featured moderately packed powder on the upper to middle sections and more firmly packed powder lower down. It was easy to pick up speed, and I enjoyed the feeling of the 1 to 3 cm of light fresh snow. A skier I rode with on the Happo Riesen Quad said, “I always follow your reports. Riesen was hardpacked last week, but the powder is back!”

Due to the winter pressure pattern with tightly packed isobars, strong, cold northwesterly winds were blowing in the upper areas of the resort, causing delays in the operation of lifts above the Alpen Quad and Skyline No. 2 Pair. The Panorama Course, with 1 to 2 cm of light fresh snow, had a moderately packed, groomed powder surface. The detour route on the Central Course (pictured)
Was groomed to the width of a single grooming machine and featured a moderately soft powder base.

The Shirakaba Slope (pictured) had well-packed powder snow all the way to the bottom, and was topped with 1 to 2 cm of light fresh snow! Around 9:50 a.m., the operation of the gondola, Happo Riesen Quad, Panorama Pair, and Kokusai 3 Pair were suspended. Additionally, access to the Omusubi area will be restricted tomorrow, 2/1 (Sat.), due to the Chanmero Freeride Omusubi OPEN event.

*Most of the snow on the roads is removed by dump trucks and disposed of in rivers, so the snowbanks along the roads don’t get very high. Additionally, since the snow is often light, it doesn’t pile up neatly.
