The Iimori Slope (pictured) will host the 45th Annual Able Hakuba Goryu Student Skiing Competition over a period of three days between tomorrow, 2/5 (Tue.), and 2/7 (Fri.)! This morning, light snow flurries were falling with occasional glimpses of sunlight. A Goryu regular I met on the slopes shared, “Yesterday afternoon was warm with light rain, but I’m glad it’s snowing today.”

At Alps-Daira, dry snow was coming down hard, and the area was shrouded in fog. However, visibility was relatively good on the Panorama Course (pictured) and the upper section of Route 8. With 3 to 5 cm of fresh, dry snow on top of a well-packed groomed powder base, it was perfect conditions for carving smooth turns just how I wanted.

The north wind was bitterly cold, making my hands freeze whenever I held the camera. The Grand Prix Course had 2 to 3 cm of fresh, light snow covering a firm, groomed powder base, and was enveloped in thick fog. The Dynamic Course had around 5 cm of fresh snow, and also had a firm, groomed powder surface.

The fog began to clear as I descended to the Woody Course, where I found 1 to 2 cm of fresh snow topping a groomed wet snow base with a powdery feel. The Toomi Slope (pictured), Powder Snow Course, and Soft Cream Course, all featured firm, groomed wet snow bases with a light 1 to 2 cm dusting of fresh snow, and offered excellent conditions for smooth and enjoyable turns.
