With the season’s strongest cold wave arriving, the fresh snowfall reached approximately 30 cm in the Kumanoyu, Okushiga, and Ichinose central area, about 20 cm in Yakebitaiyama, Hasuike, Maruike, and Sunvalley, and around 10 cm in Yokoteyama and Shibutoge. The Sun Valley B Main Course (photo) had 5 cm of light new snow on top of a moderately firm, groomed powder base, making for an incredibly smooth and satisfying ride.

When I arrived at the Sunvalley parking lot around 7 a.m., light, fine snow was falling, but it gradually eased and stopped around 9 a.m. The Sunvalley to Hasuike access course (pictured) and the gentle slope of the Sunvalley Beginner course had been groomed later than usual, and had slightly soft groomed powder surfaces. I made my way to the Hasuike Ski Resort through a tunnel of frost-covered trees.

The atmosphere was lively with high school students from Wakayama Prefecture (pictured) near the Hasuike Triple lift. I spoke with an instructor, who commented, “We were worried it might snow heavily due to the cold wave, but the weather turned out to be calm, which is great.” The students also replied with smiles, saying, “We’re having so much fun!”
[Hasuike・Hasuike A Course]
The gentle slopes of the Hasuike Junior Course and Hasuike A Course had appropriately soft, groomed powder bases. At the Maruike Ski Resort, all the groomed slopes featured soft powder surfaces as well. From the Maruike First Triple lift, I could see the currently closed Maruike A Course (entrance pictured left), and the untouched steep slope looked incredibly smooth and tempting.
