Due to the heavy snowfall brought by the strongest and longest cold wave of the season, Hakuba Cortina’s officially reported base depth exceeded 400 cm on 2/5 (Wed.)! By the way, if you looked at this photo and thought, “there’s definitely a lot of snow,” you’re a true Cortina expert. The reason? Some of the accumulated snow on the embankment to the left had to be shaved down—otherwise, the 4th Pair Lift chairs would have hit it!

While riding the 4th Pair Lift, a skier (pictured) called out to me, “Snownavi, where are you shooting from? There? I’ll drop in, so get the shot!”—and true to their word, they did! The tree area beneath the 4th Pair Lift was covered in 50 to 60 cm of light, fresh snow. Cheers erupted not just from those making tracks but also from riders on the lift, turning the scene into a true Powder Festival!

Going back to earlier in the day, when it’s a Powder Festival, we just have to show you the pre-opening line at the 2nd Quad Lift! By 8:20 a.m., the end of the queue (pictured) had already reached the 3rd Quad Lift. Then, with avalanche control delaying the 2nd Quad’s start, the line kept growing. By the time operations began at 8:50 a.m., the line had doubled back, stretching all the way to the entrance of the Kids’ Park!

With 5 to 10 cm of light new snow on a nicely packed groomed powder base, Ikenota, Ipponmatsu, Hiedayama Forest, and Rabbit (pictured) offered fantastic conditions. Meanwhile, the competition slope for the Open Category on Day 2 of the JAPAN FREERIDE OPEN (JFO) starting 2/8 (Sat.) has been set at the upper tree area of the Warabidaira Slope! This marks the first time in three years that a competition will be held in this area.
