The heavy snowfall caused by the season’s strongest and longest cold wave, which began on 2/4 (Tue.) and lasted for a week, has finally started to settle down. Thanks to the continuous snowfall and cold temperatures, all 31 courses at Madarao Kogen have excellent powder conditions! The Utopia (pictured, foreground) and Carving (pictured, back right) areas, which were groomed just before opening, featured soft snow where you could sink in with a firm step while wearing your skis.

Amid the lightly falling snow, the Champion (pictured) and Shirakaba Courses, plumes of snow rose behind skiers and snowboarders with every turn, thanks to their moderately soft, powdery groomed surfaces. The ungroomed sections along the sides had 20 to 25 cm of fresh snow. Many skiers could be seen gliding down the upper part of Giant and Powder Line, where yesterday’s tracks faintly marked the ungroomed powder surfaces.

The Sky View (pictured) Course, which winds through the snow-covered forest, had a magical, almost surreal atmosphere. The Traverse and Crystal courses had moderately firm, powdery groomed snow, while Sky View featured a softer, groomed powder surface. The SAWA I, SAWA II, and SAWA III runs, with 15 to 20 cm of light new snow, offered a smooth, easy ride thanks to their soft base.

During my reporting, there were moments when the blue sky peeked through, but also times when the snowfall intensified. Being a weekday sandwiched between the weekend and National Foundation Day, the resort saw a good number of visitors, including many families with young children. By the way, this upcoming Sunday, 2/16, is Kids Ski Day, where elementary school students can ride the lifts for free all day.
