Tsugaike REPORT

2025.02.12363 cm / Mostly Sunny

This morning’s clear skies were the first since 1/26 (Sun.), marking a spell of 17 days without sunshine. As the refreshing morning sun bathed the slopes, I spoke with a snowboarder from Taiwan (pictured) who was the first on the moderately soft, groomed powder snow of the Oya-no-hara Slope. They told me, “The snow in the Hakuba area is truly amazing. Every day of my stay has been so much fun!”

Radiativel cooling brought temperatures down to -14°C at the base before sunrise. Strong westerly winds were seen whipping up snow along the ridgelines of the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range, which was visible for the first time in a while. Meanwhile, within the resort, there was hardly any wind, and it didn’t feel too cold. The sunshine quickly raised temperatures, and by around 9:30 a.m., it was warm enough to break a sweat with a bit of movement.

The groomed section of the Tsuga-no-mori Slope (pictured) offered perfect conditions—moderately firm groomed powder that was incredibly easy to slide on! My edges held well, allowing my skis to run smoothly, and I was able to pick up speed with ease. I noticed a number of snowboarders getting off the Tsuga No. 2 Pair lit and traversing the upper part of Tsuga-no-mori on their way to the backcountry. I spoke with one of them who told me, “I’m hiking up the forest road to the Tsugaike Nature Park and Karamatsu-sawa.”

The Han-no-ki Slope started off with moderately soft, groomed powder and transitioned to a firmer, well-groomed powder base from the middle to the end (pictured) of the run. Many were using the Han-no-ki No. 3 Quad lift, and the slope provided great snow quality, with easy-to-ski conditions that persisted for quite a while.
