The 79th Annual Riesen Slalom Tournament, a longstanding Happo tradition, is just around the corner, set to take place here on the Riesen Slalom Course on 2/27 (Thu.) to 2/28 (Fri.)! This morning brought the first clear skies in 17 days, with the last sunny day being 1/26 (Sun.). A member of the ski patrol whom I spoke with said, “The snow quality is excellent, and the groomed slopes are in perfect condition. However, I’m a bit worried about the rain forecast for this afternoon.”

Thanks to radiative cooling, it was extremely cold this morning, creating perfect powder snow conditions that made a satisfying crunching sound underfoot as I walked on the groomed slopes after getting off the gondola. The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) featured moderately firm powder groomed powder on the upper to mid-sections and a firmer groomed powder base on the lower portion. The edges of my skis gripped the superbly-groomed powder surface effortlessly

I enjoyed some fast runs on the moderately packed, groomed powder snow surfaces along the southern route of Usagidaira, paralleling the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), and on the Skyline Course. In the ungroomed areas along the Kurobishi 3 Pair and Alpen Quad, the snow surface was uneven, but soft. The Grat Quad and Kurobishi 3 Pair remained closed all day due to ongoing snow clearing work.

In the glamping area, the fresh snow that had piled up through yesterday remained untouched. On the left, you can see a gazebo buried in the snow. From here, I skied down the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, Sakka Wave, and Shirakaba Slope, on well-groomed powder snow all the way to the bottom.
