It was a calm and sunny day with wispy clouds drifting in front of the sun. I spoke with a couple from the U.S. (pictured), who shared, “We’re staying in Japan for five weeks. We came to the Hakuba area after skiing in Hokkaido. It’s our second time at Hakunori, and we also visited Cortina and Tsugaike. We love Japan!”

With the clear skies, the morning was extremely cold due to radiative cooling. The Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) and Wakaguri Forest Course had a moderately soft, groomed powder surface. The groomed Rabbit Course had a moderately firm groomed powder base, but there were course restrictions in place in on the skier’s left side in preparation for the Hakuba Norikura Saitama Prefecture Mogul Championship scheduled for 2/14 (Fri.) to 2/16 (Sun.).

A Hakuba Norikura Ski School instructor (pictured) greeted me with the familiar phrase, “I always read your reports.” They continued, “With the busy holiday weekend behind us, things have settled down, so I came out for some morning training. The conditions are truly excellent! I hope people come not just for powder days but also for days like today when the groomed runs are at their best.”

The Highway Course, Kamoshika Course, and Hakunori Family Course all offered superbly smooth skiing conditions with well-packed groomed powder snow. From the Highway Course, I saw several skiers venturing into the self-responsibility area on the south side (pictured). Meanwhile, the No. 11 Pair Lift remains suspended until further notice due to ongoing snow removal work, following the heavy snowfall that began on 2/4 (Tue.) and has made safe operation impossible.

*2/16 (Sun.) is Kids’ Ski Day, where lift tickets for elementary school students will be half price. Additionally, there will be free snowmobile rides (for elementary school students and younger) and complimentary servings of pork miso soup.
*The Alps No. 9 Pair lift will be out of service for the rest of the season due to mechanical issues. A snow buggy will be running between the 9th Pair Lift base and Wakaguri Central area.
*The Alps No. 11 Pair is closed for the time being due to heavy snow.
