Light rain fell last night until early this morning at JR Hakuba Station, but fell as snow on the mountain, so the slope conditions were unaffected. However, due to strong northerly winds and a buildup of ice on the lifts and other equipment, the operation of many lifts, including the gondola, were temporarily suspended this morning. The Sakka 2 Pair started operating around 8:05 a.m., and the Sakka 3 Triple (pictured) began running around 8:20 a.m.

Visibility was limited at both the top and bottom of the ski resort due to dense snowfall and fog. On the Sakka Slope (pictured), the moderately packed groomed wet snow was topped with an unexpectedly light 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow, making for a comfortable ride. The lower sections of Sakka Wave, Kokusai, and Shirakaba were also easy to ski, with moderately soft groomed wet snow covered by 10 to 15 cm of fresh snow.

Two visitors from Australia (pictured) shared, “The snow in Hakuba is fantastic! We’ve enjoyed plenty of powder during our extended stay.” Even after numerous tracks were carved into the snow, the soft snow quality held up well, keeping the groomed courses on the lower part of the resort in great, easy-to-ski condition.

The falling snow gradually turned into fine, dry flakes. While the strong winds showed no signs of easing across the upper areas of the resort, occasional gusts also whipped up snow on the lower slopes, causing brief whiteout conditions. By the way, this coming Sunday, 2/16, is Kids’ Ski Day, and elementary school students can enjoy a free one-day lift pass!
