As the low-pressure system that passed over the Sea of Japan moved eastward, a strong winter pressure pattern with closely spaced isobars set in. This once again brought heavy snowfall to the ski resorts at the northern end of the HAKUBA VALLEY! A couple from Italy (pictured) shared, “We’ve been staying in Hakuba for five days, enjoying the slopes. The snowfall is incredible. The powder is amazing!”

The 4th Pair started operating at 9:20 a.m., drawing a long line of visitors eager for powder. On the Mt. Hieda Forest Course (pictured), 20 to 25 cm of slightly moist new snow sat on top of a moderately firm, groomed wet snow base. Due to the dense snowfall and thick fog, it was difficult to distinguish between the groomed and ungroomed areas, so I navigated the slope with caution.

On the gentler sections of the Mt. Hieda Forest Course, it was difficult to maintain momentum. Two visitors from Gunma told me, “We check your reports occasionally. We come to Hakuba to ski once or twice a week. We’re really looking forward to the fresh powder on the Itadaira Course (pictured)!”

The Itadaira Course (pictured) had been fully reset with about 30 cm of fresh snow! Although it was slightly heavy, I was able to enjoy the fluffy feel without bottoming out on the moderately firm, packed base. The Ikenota Slope was covered with 10 to 15 cm of slightly moist new snow on a somewhat firm underlying base of wet snow.
