Those who visit Madarao Kogen Ski Resort know the incredible natural beauty that surrounds the standalone peak of Mt. Madarao. The stunning curves of the mountain, lush vegetation, and minimal presence of man-made structures like utility poles create a breathtaking atmosphere, especially on clear days. This morning, the light snow that had been falling early on stopped completely around 8 a.m., revealing a brilliantly blue sky.

On Paradise (pictured), Utopia, and the Beginner A and B Courses, the moderately soft, groomed packed powder provided great edge control. By the way, a new dining spot has opened at Madarao Kogen, a “Kamakura Restaurant” made of snow shelters behind Restaurant Mon Aile. (Reservations required, open until early March.)

I met a member of the ski patrol who mentioned, “Yesterday, we had a proper blizzard, but the slopes maintained their powder conditions and are still in top shape.” The groomed packed powder on the lower Giant, Champion, Sky View (pictured), and Sky Love slopes was firm and easy to ski.

The Crystal Slope (pictured), which has longer periods of shade, also had no hard or icy spots at all and featured a moderately firm, groomed powder base. Not only the groomed slopes but also the tree areas, especially around the River Line and SAWA I, were popular spots today. A snowboarder who had just come from SAWA III mentioned, “It was super soft! It’s a fun course with interesting terrain.”
