Although patches of blue sky were visible this morning, dry snow danced in the air, carried by strong, intermittent winds from the northwest. A skier from Mie, whom I rode with on Line-C when it started right on time at 8:30 a.m., commented, “Just like yesterday, the wind is strong today. And because the wind is so cold, it feels even chillier than I expected.” It also felt colder to me than what the temperature suggested.
[Upper Portion of Route 1]

On the upper section of Route 1 (first photo), my skis glided smoothly over the firmly groomed wet snow base that was topped with a fluffy layer of new snow between 1 to 5 cm. Routes 5 and 6 (pictured) had moderately packed groomed wet snow covered with a dusting of 2 to 3 cm of fresh snow. Conditions were so good, I found myself wanting to use Line-C to keep lapping the upper portion of Route 1 down to Route 6.
[Route 6]

On the upper half of the ski resort, there were strong gusts of wind powerful enough to almost knock me off balance (pictured). The lower section of Route 8 had a firm, groomed wet snow base topped with light new snow scattered unevenly in piles between 1 and 10 cm, and I enjoyed the fluffy feeling of skiing through the deeper snowdrifts. Due to the strong winds, Line-E was suspended.
[Lower Portion of Route 8]

On the groomed lower section of Route 1 (pictured), where the firm wet snow was topped with about 1 cm of new snow, small snowballs were scattered across the slope but didn’t interfere with skiing. The well-packed medium to large-sized moguls on the ungroomed Route 3 were covered with 3 to 5 cm of new snow. By the way, a Hakuba 47 Scavenger Hunt event will be held on 2/16 (Sun.) in celebration of Kids’ Ski Day. (Starts at noon, free participation, open to elementary school children and younger.)
