The Hakuba-Nagano Toll Road, which previously cost ¥210 for regular vehicles and ¥150 for kei cars, will become toll-free at midnight tonight! To celebrate, an event commemorating the elimination of the toll will be held at Michi-no-Eki Nakajo on 2/16 (Sun.), featuring mochi pounding and handouts of sweet red bean soup at 11 a.m., followed by handouts of oyaki (Japanese dumplings) at 12:30 p.m. This morning in Hakuba, the weather provided calm and perfect skiing conditions.
[Panorama Course]

On the Panorama Course (pictured), the moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface had a powdery feel, and allowed me to make precise, controlled turns with ease. As I headed towards the upper part of the ski resort, an announcement was made that the opening of the Alpen Quad and Usagidaira Pair would be delayed due to snow removal and inspections following the strong winds from the past two days.

I decided to head down the firm, groomed wet snow on the lower Panorama Forest Trail to the Sakka Slope, then took the Sakka Kitaone Quad and Skyline 2 Pair to reach the Skyline Course. The groomed sections of Skyline (pictured) offered moderately packed wet snow that provided smooth and easy skiing conditions.
[Skyline Course]

The surface of the ungroomed sections of Skyline was crusted over, with a mix of hard and soft spots, making for challenging conditions. At HAPPO PARKS (pictured), the firm wet snow base of the groomed areas had small snowballs forming around the tracks of skiers and snowboarders. The Kitaone Traverse Cat Track and Shirakaba Slope also featured firm wet snow on the groomed runs.
