This morning wet snow was falling at the base of the mountain, and the roads that access the ski resort were slippery due to an accumulation of slushy snow. The gondolas began operating 20 minutes later than scheduled as snow removal and course checks pushed back the start time. The heavy snow falling in the Usagidaira area was blown about by the moderately-strong northwest winds.

According to a conversation I had with a member of the ski patrol, the entire top half of the Panorama Course was groomed, while an area the width of 5 grooming machines had been groomed on the skier’s left side of the course’s bottom half. However, with 40 to 45cm of fluffy new snow (and 20 to 30cm of new snow on top of the groomed areas) it was honestly hard to tell the difference. 😉

I had a conversation in passing with a skier (pictured) who told me they loved our site and mentioned how much fun they were having. As they continued down the mountain their skis sent up a huge rooster tail of snow. The details of the wind-whipped snow surface were hard to see due to the fog and falling snow, but I still enjoyed a few extremely fun runs on good powder snow!

Looking at the snow still coming down hard and fast at 10:00, I began to get excited about the thought of having even more snow tomorrow. In other news, the first event of the season, a ‘Kids Ski Free Day,’ is set to take place on 12/18 (Sun.), with elementary school students able to ride the lifts for free. Also, on 12/24 (Sat.) and 12/25 (Sun.), the ‘22-23 NEW MODEL BLASTRACK & OGASAKA SKI TEST RIDE’ will be held at the Usagidaira Terrace. (Starts at 9:30 a.m. / no participation fee / ID required)
