This afternoon, a strong winter weather system is expected to bring heavy snowfall. Looking up from the village at dawn today, the slopes were beautifully lit by the first rays of sunshine, but by the time operations began, the sky had turned overcast (pictured). Later, winds from the northeast gradually picked up, and by around 8:30 a.m., dry snow started coming down hard.

With the weekend, which was the warmest of January and February, behind us, the firm groomed surface of the Riesen Slalom Course was composed of fine granular snow. Higher up along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) and on the southern route of Usagidaira, the groomed bases were composed of firm wet snow. My edges gripped the snow surface securely, allowing for smooth and satisfying turns.

On the central part of the Skyline Course (pictured), the well-packed groomed wet snow at the top gradually turned into fine granular snow as I descended. The ungroomed sections were marked with firm bumps and tracks. The groomed Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, Sakka Slope, and Shirakaba Slope had well-packed granular snow, providing a firm and consistent surface.

Riesen Grat has been closed since 2/10 (Mon.) due to the strongest and longest cold wave of the season. As you can see, the heavy snowfall buried the lift towers, making it impossible to operate the chairs. Snow removal work is scheduled for today, but if the heavy snow continues, reopening may be delayed even further.
