The latest cold wave, starting on 2/17 (Mon.), brought more heavy snowfall to Akakura Onsen Ski Resort, bringing the official base depth all the way up to 440 cm! Today, the Panorama Course (pictured) featured a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface with 7 to 8 cm of dry, fresh snow on top. Some skiers were seen carving into the fresh snow along the course edges, which had accumulated in the amount of about 20 cm.

Due to delayed snow removal work, the Kumado No. 4 Triple and Yodel No. 4 Pair lifts started later than expected. Amidst the snowfall of varying intensity, there were even moments when the sun peeked through the clouds. On the gently sloped Family Slope (pictured), the moderately-packed powder snow base offered a smooth ride, and I enjoyed the feeling of skiing through the 6 to 8 cm of dry, fresh snow on top at a leisurely pace.

I spoke with a couple from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who shared, “This is my husband’s (pictured, left) first time at Akakura Onsen, and I (pictured, right) haven’t been here since I was a child. I have fond memories of coming here every year with my family for skiing.” The Downhill Chuo Slope also had a moderately firm, groomed powder surface. I had fun carving fresh tracks on an area of untouched snow that was covered in about 8 cm of new snow.

The Karamatsu Course (pictured), like the Family Slope, also had excellent skiing conditions. I crossed paths with a group of high school students from Osaka (pictured), who commented, “We’re here for a four-day ski school program. Today is our second day. We’re the group who had some prior skiing experience.”
