This season, the Hakuba Iwatake Snowboard School is offering English & Chinese lessons. I spoke to three visitors from Hong Kong (pictured, left) who were taking a lesson, and they told me, “Snowboarding is so much fun!” Their instructors (pictured, right) explained, “Our lessons are the same quality as those for Japanese guests, taught by either English-speaking Japanese instructors or native speakers.”

For some groups, a translator (pictured, third from the left) accompanies the main instructor during lessons. Here, an Australian family was receiving guidance on edge control and where to focus their gaze while turning. (*A two-hour lesson, including snowboard & boot rental and a one-day lift pass, costs JPY39,700 for adults and JPY34,000 for children.)

With cold temperatures continuing this morning, all groomed courses had pleasantly soft powder snow surfaces! On the Village Side, the downhill races for the National Student Iwatake Ski Tournament Alpine competitions (speed events) were underway. Three racers (pictured), who had just finished their runs, commented, “We were teammates on our high school ski club. Now we go to different universities, but we still push each other to improve.”

The downhill races were held separately across Kometsuga, Kamoshika Racing, and Big Bahn. Meanwhile, on Up Bahn, the designated course for team performance training in the skiing fundamentals division, members from Meiji University “Rondor” group (pictured) were practicing their formations, calling out counts in loud voices as they trained.
