This Sunday, 2/23, at 11:30 a.m., a “Yellowtail Cutting Demonstration” will be held at Tsugaike’s Yuki-no-hiroba, where you can buy fresh yellowtail and enjoy it on the spot! There were light snow flurries earlier in the morning, but the snow began to pick up slightly around 8 a.m. I spoke with a member of the ski patrol who shared, “It didn’t snow much last night, but with the low temperatures, the groomed slopes feel really nice.”

As we enter the back half of February, more and more students can be seen on the slopes, and Tsugaike is particularly great for lessons and group practice, thanks to its exceptionally wide courses. On the Shirakaba Slope (pictured), where a light layer of fresh snow had settled, the moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface provided excellent edge grip, making it easy to execute smooth turns.

I took the gondola from the mid-station up to the upper part of the ski resort. On the top to middle section of Han-no-ki (pictured), the well-packed groomed powder snow base, with about 1 cm of light new snow on top, allowed me to easily gain speed. The ungroomed steep slope in the middle of Han-no-ki had about 10 cm of fluffy new snow, providing a great powder experience.

The lower part of Han-no-ki had some artificial snow mixed into the base, which was generally firm, groomed powder snow that made for a comfortable ride. By the way, artificial snow is currently being made to ensure there is plenty of snow to finish out the season. Both the Oya-no-hara and Karamatsu slopes had moderately packed, easy-to-ski powder snow grooming.
