Given how things were already during Christmas this season, it’s not hard to imagine how incredible the rime ice and “snow monsters” are looking at Yokoteyama and Shibutoge now in February. The snow that had been gently swirling about this morning began to ease, and when the Third Sky Lift started operating at around 9:50 a.m., the fog began to lift, revealing the snow monsters. There were exclamations of “Wow, amazing!” and “I’m so glad I came!” from people gazing from the lift.

The groomed Yokoteyama Second Slope, with about 10 cm of light new snow, offered a great variety of conditions across its length. The intermediate level course at the beginning had a well-packed powder surface, while the beginner areas in the middle and end had moderately firm powder grooming. Each had a smooth, silky feel that made for a very pleasant skiing experience.

Around 9:30 a.m., both the Yokoteyama First Slope and the Second Slope began to get busy. Like the Second Slope, the First Slope at Yokoteyama and Shibutoge offered excellent powder conditions! The freezing cold had caused my face mask and knit hat to freeze without me even noticing.

I skied the ungroomed King Course (pictured) while descending from Shibutoge, and found that the soft undulating base and the fresh 10 cm of snow on top made for a fluffy and enjoyable ride. I met a group of four from Shizuoka Prefecture at the Second Sky lift who said, “This is our first time at Shiga Kogen. The floating sensation from the off-piste sections were so enjoyable. We’re still debating where to ski tomorrow.” I suggested they check out the resort reports for some tips!
