The slopes were so blanketed in white that it felt like you could ski anywhere! The first to hit the Warabidaira Slope today were a couple from England (pictured), who shared, “We’ve been staying in the Hakuba area for a week, skiing at Hakunori and Cortina.” Around 8 a.m., dry snow began falling in earnest, causing the surroundings to darken slightly, and making the snow surface a bit harder to see.

With this much snow, the true scale and natural features of the mountain really shine through. The vast Warabidaira Slope, with its mix of gentle and steep inclines and winding paths, is a place I believe you could never tire of skiing. This morning, the steeper sections on the first half had well-packed groomed powder, while the gentler inclines and detours along the latter half had moderately firm, groomed powder surfaces. In the softer, ungroomed areas, about 10 to 15 cm of fluffy new snow had accumulated.

The groomed Snake Course (pictured) and the first half of the Rabbit Course, had firmly-packed powder and a light layer of about 2 cm of new snow that made for great conditions for skiing. The latter half of the Rabbit Course also had an easy-to-ski, moderately firm groomed surface. The Ikenota Slope and the Wakaguri Slope, with a layer of about 2 cm of light new snow on top, had a pleasantly soft and powdery groomed surfaces.

“The powder at Cortina is my favorite!” commented a family from the U.S. (pictured). Later, I met a man from Australia who told me in fluent Japanese, “I’ve been staying in Hakuba from January to the end of February and mainly skiing at Cortina. I love Cortina!” This made me truly realize once again how popular Cortina is among foreigners.
