I couldn’t help but gasp at the breathtaking beauty of Ura Taro Family East (pictured) and Family West, adorned with frost-covered trees. The well-packed, flatly-groomed slope surfaces had excellent powder snow conditions, making for an incredibly smooth ride. Meanwhile, at the adjacent Urataro Kamoshika’s slalom course, Sugadaira Elementary School was hosting its annual school ski competition.

Like the north-facing Ura Taro courses, the south-facing Shirogane Slope also had a firm, groomed powder snow base. However, unlike Urataro, Shirogane Schwarz (third photo) was a hidden gem with very few people on it this morning. I spotted many ski school students on Shirogane Beginner (pictured), the access route to the top of Mt. Taro, and on the Hinode Forest Course.

The blue sky today was simply stunning! This morning brought chilly temps and the kind of clear weather Sugadaira is known for, and I found myself naturally taking deep breaths in such a beautiful environment. On 2/21 (Fri.) and 2/22 (Sat.), the “Nagano Open ANSIN-LINK 7th Cross Satoshi Aota Memorial Cup” will be held on Omote Davos East.

At Restaurant Wing, inside the Sugadaira Sun Hotel at the base of the Ura Taro Slope, I highly recommend the Dal (Lentil) Curry with Sesame Naan Set (¥1,500), which is made fresh to order. Another great choice is the Grilled Chicken Thigh with Shio-Koji Set Meal (pictured, ¥1,600). The shio-koji marinated chicken was packed with flavor, tender, and filling, and the side of tonjiru pork miso soup is also hearty and satisfying.
