Among the events taking place as part of the Iwatake National Student Ski Competition, the demonstration skiing division held its opening ceremony today at 3:00 p.m. This event is Japan’s largest such student skiing competition. I spoke with two members of the Niigata University Gakuyukai Demonstration Ski Club (pictured), who shared their goals, saying “Since this is our last tournament, we’re aiming for individual victory, and as a team, we’re striving for the podium!”

I realize now this picture ended up looking quite similar to the fourth photo from our last report, but the number of athletes gathered at the base today was noticeably more this time. The tournament schedule is as follows: individual qualifying on 2/27 (Thu.), individual competition on 2/28 (Fri.), individual finals on 3/1 (Sat.), rookie competition on 3/2 (Sun.), and team compeition on 3/3 (Mon.)!

The snow flurries that had been falling before business hours turned to heavy snow around 8 a.m. The South Slope (pictured) had a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface with about 5 cm of light new snow on top, creating excellent, easy-to-ski conditions with smooth glide. By around 9 a.m., the Mountain Side started to get noticeably busier, especially with international visitors.

I was greeted by a skier who was the first to hit the Sawa Course, and was told, “I always use Snownavi! I’m skiing the Sawa Course until DANGAN opens.” The Sawa Course (pictured) and the Sunny Valley Course had moderately packed, groomed wet snow bases topped with about 2 to 3 cm of light new snow, making for easy and enjoyable skiing conditions.
