This morning, I spoke with a skier from Saitama (pictured) who told me, “I always check your reports! I managed to squeeze in a run on the Riesen Slalom Course before it closes for the ‘Riesen Slalom Competition.’ The conditions were fantastic, with about 5 cm of fresh snow on a moderately-packed, flat surface.” By the way, take a look at his feet—there’s quite a bit of new snow!

With fresh powder in mind, I headed to Urakuro (pictured), the north-facing off-piste area I had been eyeing for a while. The course along the ridge featured firm, shallow undulations covered with 10 to 15cm of light fresh snow! I enjoyed a mini powder run, though at times, the fierce north wind was so strong it was hard to even stand upright.

A skier who had just come down from Urakuro (pictured) shared, “I started off with my regular skis, but there was more fresh snow than I expected, so I quickly switched to my powder skis and came back.” The area above the glamping zone (pictured) offered a similar powder experience to Urakuro.

The snow falling lightly at the base of the resort before 8:00 a.m. grew more intense as strong northerly winds carried in denser snow. At times, thick fog rolled in as well, reducing visibility to near whiteout conditions. The groomed southern route of Usagidaira and the area along the Kurobishi Quad had moderately firm, groomed wet snow bases that were covered with 5 to 10 cm of light fresh snow, making for enjoyable runs.
