The intense cold typically seen in January lasted all the way until 2/24 (Mon., holiday) this season, but according to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s most recent one-month forecast, both temperatures and snowfall are expected to follow average trends from this point on. This morning at Alps-Daira (pictured), dry snow was falling steadily, carried by shifting northeasterly winds.

The slopes themselves remain in excellent condition! This morning, the Panorama Course featured moderately-packed groomed powder snow, while the Grand Prix Course (pictured) had a slightly firmer groomed powder base topped with 3 to 5 cm of light fresh snow, making for smooth and enjoyable riding. However, the dim lighting and occasional thick fog made it hard to distinguish details of the snow surface, which proved challenging at times.

The surface of the ungroomed Technical Course was marked with moderately firm bumps and tracks. Both the Dynamic Course, with its firm groomed powder base, and the Woody Course, with slightly softer groomed powder, were lightly dusted with a few centimeters of fresh snow. As I descended to the Toomi Slope (pictured) around 9:00 a.m., the light snowfall from earlier had intensified, and was now coming down harder.

A couple from Mie Prefecture (pictured) greeted me saying, “We always check your reports! We’re staying at Mountain Lodge Wiz in Kashimayari. This snow really came out of nowhere!” (Apologies for the water droplets on the lens!). The Toomi Slope, Powder Snow Course (pictured), and Soft Cream Course all had about 2 cm of fresh snow on top of well-packed, easy-to-ski groomed powder surfaces.
