This morning, I met a man at the base who told me, “I was planning to go to the tree area, but the snow is wet and not very good, so I think I’ll have fun on the groomed slopes instead.” However, as I made my way up to the Yamabiko Slope, I found about 5 cm of fresh, light and fluffy powder! The unexpectedly good snow quality quickly lifted my spirits.

In addition to the great snow quality, the timing seemed perfect as the fog quickly cleared just as the resort opened, and the sun began to shine through. Cheers of “Wow!” and “This feels amazing!” echoed from all around. However, due to the strong winds last night, there were uneven snowdrifts on the middle section of Yamagata D, which faces west (pictured).

The conditions on Kokenashi (pictured), Uenotaira, and the Paradise Slope were similarly great to Yamabiko, with around 5 cm of soft, fluffy new snow making them easy to ski. On the firm, groomed wet snow surface of the Schneider Slope, there was about 3 cm of damp new snow. It was interesting to see such a big difference in snow quality.

There was about 3 cm of wet new snow on the well-packed, groomed wet snow of base of the Hikage Slope (pictured), but my skis glided smoothly. After trying out the SAVREQ system, which automatically tracks and records videos of skiers, I headed to the ungroomed Hikage Slope B Course around 10 a.m., just as the groomed surfaces started to soften. The moguls in the mogule lane had the perfect size and softness, making me want to go through again and again.
