Shiga REPORT

2025.02.28250 cm / Sunny

Shiga Kogen’s second peak season, the spring period from March to April, is approaching! If you’re not a fan of the cold, this is the perfect time to visit. I spoke with a skier from Kanagawa at the summit of Terakoya (pictured, 2,060m), who remarked, “This is my first time in Shiga Kogen—what a spectacular view!” I could hear other excited voices echoing around the slopes, with people exclaiming things like, “Amazing!” and “Wow, it’s so beautiful!”

Between 2/25 (Tue.) and this morning, we’ve enjoyed a stretch of calm, sunny days. Despite that, the groomed Eternal Course (pictured), LIPS Course, and Philosophy Course have managed to keep their well-packed powder conditions. The ultra-flat finish on the surface of the Eternal Course, in particular, was so good that I found myself wanting to ride it again and again.

Going back to earlier in the morning, I took the Ichinose Diamond Quad, which started running even before its official 8:30 a.m. opening time, and skied down the spacious Diamond Slope (pictured). The moderately-firm, powder-like wet snow surface provided solid edge grip, allowing for smooth and stable turns.

Ichinose Family (pictured) also had a firm, powder-like groomed wet snow surface, while Takamagahara Mammoth and Tannenomori had harder packed wet snow. “It’s cold, but being on the snow is so much fun!” was the comment from a group of three visitors from Okinawa whom I met at the summit of Higashidateyama. They were on a snowshoe tour led by a guide from the Shiga Kogen Guide Association.
