Mogul season has arrived! Two of Japan’s most-renowned mogul slopes are the area along the Alpen Quad of Usagidaira (pictured, 760m, max 31°, avg 23°) and the slope paralleling the Kurobishi 3 Pair (500m, max 31°, avg 27°). This morning, both were covered in firm, medium-to-large-size moguls. I decided to start my day on the Panorama Course while waiting for the snow surface in the mogul areas to soften a bit.

I was able to carve smooth, controlled turns on the firm, groomed wet snow base of the Panorama Course (pictured). I also heard others around me saying things like, ‘This feels great!’ and ‘It’s super easy to ski!’ Today, the clear blue skies and strong sunlight quickly pushed up the temperature, bringing a touch of spring by around 9 a.m.

My edges gripped the snow as if they were glued to the surface on the well-packed, groomed wet snow with a powdery feel along the Kurobishi Quad. As I watched skiers descend, the sharp, precise turns of an instructor from the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School (pictured) were particularly impressive. Later, on the mogul slope along the Kurobishi 3 Pair, the deep snow had buried most of the shrubs, making the run feel wider than usual for this time of year.

I spoke with two visitors from Kyoto (pictured), who shared, “We always check your reports! The slopes are easy to ski on today, and with great weather and scenery– it’s perfect!” Both the Skyline Course and the south-side route of Usagidaira had well-packed, groomed wet snow bases. As I skied further down the mountain, the snow turned into granular spring-like snow near the end of the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, while on the Sakka and Shirakaba Slopes, the surface of the well-packed, groomed granular snow had a slightly moist texture.
