Light rain fell yesterday, the first rainfall of the season, but had turned to snow by dawn. As a result, the roads in the valley were covered in extremely slippery slush. Today, with wet snow coming down steadily, the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had a firm, groomed granular snow base topped with 3 to 5 cm of slightly moist fresh snow, making for smooth, fast runs.

About half of the Usuba Slope near the end of Riesen was closed off in preparation for the FIS FAR EAST CUP 2025 HAKUBA, taking place from 3/3 (Mon.) to 3/7 (Fri.). When I tried to head back up, I learned the Happo Riesen Quad was temporarily suspended due to frozen chairs. Meanwhile, the groomed slopes started to become more and more bumpy as tracks were laid down.

HAPPO PARKS (pictured) had 5 to 10 cm of slightly wet fresh snow over a well-packed groomed granular snow base (pictured). The elements were beautifully maintained again today, making it easy to ride with confidence. The steep slopes of Kitaone featured well-formed medium-to-large moguls. On the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, about 3 cm of fresh snow sat on top of the moderately packed groomed granular snow surface, but due to avalanche concerns, the final section was closed.

I ran into a skier from Tokyo (pictured—we met back in December!) who mentioned, “I always read your reports! It was raining yesterday, but I’m glad it turned to snow today. I’m staying at a lodge in the valley for about half the season.” On the groomed Panorama Course (pictured), about 5 cm of fresh snow topped a firm granular snow base, and I found it enjoyable for making smooth, comfortable turns.
