REPORT

This morning, I spoke with a resort staff member who mentioned, “Yesterday’s rain made the snow slushy, and since it didn’t get too cold last night, the groomed runs aren’t too hard.” The Mt. Hieda Forest Course (pictured) had a firm, groomed wet snow base with about 10 cm of slightly damp fresh snow on top, making for smooth gliding conditions. However, the dense snowfall and light fog made it difficult to see the surface clearly.

Hardened tracks from yesterday marked the ungroomed surface of the Itadaira Course (pictured), which had around 10 to 15 cm of fresh snow on top, and at times, I could hear my skis scraping the base when setting an edge. I was greeted by two visitors from Kanagawa, who told me, “We’ve seen the Snownavi site before. The underlying base of Itadaira is hard packed today. We’re skiing again tomorrow, so we hope the snow keeps falling!”

The Ikenota Slope (pictured) had a well-packed, groomed wet snow base with 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow. Early in the morning, the surface was fast and smooth, making for a great ride. However, by around 9 a.m., as more young skiers and riders arrived, the snow surface became increasingly uneven.

Two visitors from Aichi (pictured) shared with me, “We came to Cortina for the first time on a bus tour. We usually ski in Gifu, but we’re amazed by the snow quality in the Hakuba area! Tonight, we’re looking forward to the buffet and hot spring at Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba.” Given today’s conditions, I was a bit surprised by their comment about the snow quality, but as the saying goes, even on an off day, Hakuba still delivers. Feeling uplifted, I wrapped up my report.
