The snowfall that began falling yesterday afternoon and continued through last night was… heavy! The low-pressure system passing south of Japan even brought about 1 cm of snow to Tokyo last night, but temperatures didn’t drop much on the Sea of Japan side. This morning at Kurobishi and Usagidaira, light ice pellets were falling at times, as dense fog occasionally rolled in and out.

On the ungroomed area along the Kurobishi 3 Pair lift line (pictured, background), about 15 cm of heavy new snow had settled over the well-packed leftover tracks and moguls marking the base. In addition, the crusty surface made it difficult to turn. A snowboarder who had just made their way down commented with a laugh, “I charged in at full speed, but the heavy snow grabbed my board, and I wiped out!”

About 1 to 3 cm of damp new snow had settled on top of the firm, groomed wet snow surfaces of the Panorama Course (pictured) and the area along the Kurobishi Quad line. However, the new snow had crusted over, making it tricky to carve deep turns without catching an edge. I opted for a more direct line, picking up speed as I went.

On the Skyline Course, 1 to 2 cm of damp new snow had topped the firm, groomed wet snow base, with the snow surface noticeably softening as I skied further down. The surface layers of the moderately firm wet snow bases on the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, Sakka Wave, and Shirakaba Slope had also begun to soften and moisten. This morning, the groomed slopes on the lower areas of the resort felt particularly smooth and easy to ski.
