The National Student Ski Competition wrapped up on 3/3 (Mon.), but Iwatake remains lively with a mix of international visitors and young Japanese skiers, including students. By the way, the overall champions of Japan’s largest student skiing competition, the National Student Ski Competition Iwatake (Demonstration Skiing Division), were both the men’s and women’s teams from the Shinshu University Demonstration Ski Club! This morning, snow flurries were drifting in, carried by a gentle north wind.

Today, the 3.3-kilometer-long Sunny Valley Course featured a hard packed, groomed wet snow base on the top to mid-section and a moderately firm groomed wet snow base toward the end. I ran into a couple from Hyogo (pictured), who told me, “We always check your reports! We come to Iwatake at least once a season. Tomorrow, we’re planning to head to Yakebitaiyama in Shiga Kogen.” I enjoyed carving smooth turns from top to bottom on the wide-open slopes in the early morning.

A father from Osaka (pictured, left) shared, “I love Snownavi—it’s so great to finally meet you! We’re staying for three nights and planning to ski at various resorts in the HAKUBA VALLEY. Choosing Iwatake today was definitely the right call.” The South Slope and VIEW C had hard packed, groomed wet snow bases, while the East Slope featured a firm, groomed wet snow surface.

As of 10 a.m., the Gondola Base Station (pictured) was bustling, with long lines at both the lift ticket counter and the gondola boarding area. However, since weekday crowds tend to arrive later, an early gondola run followed by laps on the Mountain Side is a great way to avoid the congestion.
