Yesterday, 3/5 (Wed.), the 4th Pair and 5th Pair lifts were closed all day due to increased avalanche risk. I’d love to start by saying we had fresh powder waiting on the upper slopes this morning, but with little snowfall overnight and the snow from the night before taking a hit from yesterday’s rain, I expected challenging conditions. Curious about the state of the snow, I headed for the summit.

The ungroomed Mt. Hieda Course 1 (pictured) had an uneven granular snow base covered with 5 to 10 cm of slightly heavy fresh snow. I expected the base to be frozen solid, but it was only slightly difficult to set my edges, and the fresh snow provided enough cushion for a smooth ride. The beautiful rime ice surrounding the area also kept my spirits high.

The groomed Itadaira Course (pictured) had a hard packed granular snow surface, making it somewhat difficult to maintain edge hold. Patches of fresh snow not blown away by the north winds were scattered unevenly across the slope, creating sudden changes in glide feel and making for challenging conditions. I had to keep a close eye on the snow surface while skiing.

The Mt. Hieda Forest Course had a groomed wet snow surface mixed with granular snow and topped with fresh snow, making for smooth and easy skiing conditions. The Ikenota Slope (pictured), Ipponmatsu Course, and Warabidaira Slope had groomed granular snow bases with surfaces that had started to soften. By around 10 a.m., temperatures had risen, and the wind had calmed in the lower areas of the resort, but the snow continued to fall steadily.
